Without a doubt my family was
Number One in the dysfunctional category! Both my mother and my dad had
been married before and had children from their previous marriages. Sadly,
my dad had no clue where his son was, but my sister, Carolyn lived with us
and all of them wanted very badly for a little baby to come along
and be the glue to hold this family together — so, mother and daddy worked very "lovingly" to bring me into the world.
On October 28, 1950, at 4:54 am, I came into this
world. They were disappointed with my gender, and after some arguing, they
finally settled on my name, Sharon Lee Kutch. Oh, they were proud of me,
no doubt about that, but the one that would end up being my
caretaker was Carolyn. Mother was very weak and ten months after
my birth would end up needing a complete hysterectomy.
At that point, my care was turned over to my aunt who had a daughter
nine months older than me and nine months younger than me, and all of us
were being breast fed. Can you imagine? Oh, well, those were the days —
right?
Little did anyone know that during
this time daddy turned to Carolyn for some of his — other needs. It
would be years before Carolyn would tell anyone what went on.
Daddy was, without a doubt, a ladies' man. He loved (?) women. He was a
member of the VFW and the American Legion; and a loyal one. When mother
got better, she dressed up every day, because she never knew when he was
going to take her out dancing. She was beautiful, they made a truly
handsome couple. (This is not a great picture, but you'll get the
idea.)

Now I don't want you to think that daddy was the
only one that had his faults, mother wasn't perfect either. As it turned
out, mother discovered that daddy was fooling around and she decided that
was was good for the geese was good for the gander and she met someone
herself. I knew about all of the above because both of them carried me to
meet the other folks. It wasn't a fun thing for me!
Well, they started literally fighting. I remember one night in
particular. Daddy had me in the house with him and had mother locked out.
She was running around the house screaming for daddy to let her in or
either let me out. She finally came around to the back door and drove her
hand through the glass pane and unlocked the door. Blood was everywhere.
One of the neighbors had called the police. I was taken to a neighbor's
house and I don't know what happened to mother or daddy. I just remember
being terrified.

Not long after that I remember daddy moving out and moving in with his
girlfriend and her two daughters. I was extremely upset and jealous.
Mother wanted me to tell her attorney a story about daddy putting his hand
in my pants and touching me. I couldn't believe she wanted me to tell
anyone that! How did she know? I never told her that! I just couldn't
believe it. I didn't tell the man that and she got really mad at me. Daddy
made me promise not to ever tell and I didn't! I couldn't, I just
couldn't. He might not ever want to see me again.
Anyhow, they did get a divorce and daddy married the lady. She had been
a stripper with the fair. I didn't like her, but I really liked her two
daughters; Marion and Vivian. We had a great time together every time I
went to see them. I really wanted to live with them, but mother wouldn't
let me.
