A wise child accepts a parent's discipline; a young mocker refuses to listen.
Proverbs 13:1
If you are a parent with more than one child you know how differently children respond to discipline. Dr. James Dobson calls children who obey their parents "complacent." These are children who do exactly what their parents expect from them. It is the other children that prove difficult and who, we think, will end up in trouble. However, things aren't always that cut and dry.
My oldest child, Michelle, was a complacent child. She grew up obeying me and doing exactly what was expected of her – until she turned fourteen. She had made friends with a group of people at her school that were exact opposites. She entered her rebellious period! Praise be to God – this phase of Michelle's life didn't last long.
The best we can do for our children is live our lives as examples and be consistent. I think another outcome of the recent tragedies is that our children are recognizing that no one is invincible!
Father, we praise You and thank You for Your eternal wisdom. We thank You for Your discipline of us and for never giving up! We need You!
