Not long after this, the LORD sent this message to King
Ahaz: ;"Ask me for a sign, Ahaz, to prove that I will crush your enemies as
I have promised. Ask for anything you like, and make it as difficult as you
want."
But the king refused. "No," he said, "I wouldn't test the LORD like that."
Then Isaiah said, "Listen well, you royal
family of David! You aren't satisfied to exhaust my patience. You exhaust the
patience of God as well! ;All right then, the Lord himself will choose the
sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and
will call him Immanuel—'God is with us.' ;By the time this child is old
enough to eat curds and honey, he will know enough to choose what is right and
reject what is wrong."
Isaiah 7:10-15
Yes, this is the scripture reference I was talking about yesterday. Imagine God getting so upset that He offers one of His mysteries to an unbeliever! Yep, I believe He still does that sometimes. He truly is God with us! Anytime I hear that phrase numerous songs run through my head simultaneously! How often we sing the words, but forget the message. God with us! He is with us even now!
Ahaz was the son of Isaiah's beloved King Uzziah, one of the great kings of the Old Testament. During Ahaz' kingship the people were about to be attacked and this king was filled with fear. Well, God sent Isaiah to let him know that He was with them. However, Ahaz doubted. God then told Isaiah that He would give Ahaz a sign. When Ahaz refused the sign, in false humility, God went deeper than the moment with Ahaz, He allowed Isaiah to prophesy about the coming Savior's birth.
What do we refuse? Does God want to give us a sign about something and we refuse with false humility? Does God want to bless us and we refuse like the people in the old Excedrin commercials who said, "Mother, please! I'd rather do it myself!" Is that what we say to God? Had we really rather do it ourselves, or as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley sang, had we rather do it "our way"? Well, folks, actions do speak louder than words!
Father, You know how often we cry for Jesus to come on back now, but Lord are we really ready? There are so many who don't even know you. Help us through this election year to know exactly how to vote so that this country will truly remain, "One nation under God."Open our eyes to every opportunity and let us never forget that You are with us! Oh, and help us know deep down in our hearts that the best is yet to come!
