"No, the kind of fasting I want calls you to free those who are wrongly
imprisoned and to stop oppressing those who work for you. Treat them fairly and
give them what they earn. I want you to share your food with the hungry and to
welcome poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and
do not hide from relatives who need your help.
"If you do these things, your
salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your
godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD
will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the LORD
will answer. 'Yes, I am here,' he will quickly reply."
Isaiah
58:6-9a
Well, this might be one of those passages of scripture that truly speaks for itself without comment. Maybe we need to write this one down and paste it in places where we will see it at different times throughout the day!
Fasting is all about concentrating on God; whether we receive a word from Him or the petition we are requesting or not. When the Lord calls us to fast He is calling us to a deeper level of intimacy with Himself. Believe it or not – God wants you to know Him and have open communication with Him, and sometimes it takes fasting to experience that.
God may call us to fast from food (chocolate for me), TV, or whatever may be taking the position that He wants in our lives. However, I feel Him telling us that He wants us to fast from our selfishness and preoccupation with what "could" happen.
Let's simply pray for one another that we will be people who truly treat one another in ways that will genuinely please our Father and trust Him for each and every moment of our lives!
Lord, I praise You for Your Word that convicts through the loving power of Your Holy Spirit. Please help me be the person You want me to be!
